Is Augusta really as bad a city as Golf Magazine says?

"UNLIKE THE MASTERS, Augusta is largely low rent, a bargain-basement mosaic of strip malls, strip joints and unassuming houses -- all surrounding the world's most exclusive club. One attracts galleries and the globe's best golfers. The other attracts gawkers on the lookout for a topless table dance. But despite being worlds apart, it's still a short walk from Amen Corner to a Bud Light and beef jerky at the corner store."

I live in Augusta. No, the writer is totally wrong. All cities have bad parts of town, and it seems as if this writer went only to those places. Our Mayor Deke Copenhaver is deeply offended by these comments and he has made a statement about it in our daily newspaper that you can read on line.

Go downtown sometime Edith. Enjoy the loan sharks, titty bars, pawn shops and open drug dealing. I know. I live in that h*ll hole.
noils2 EVERY city has that. There are other things in Augusta, though. You have to separate yourself from those things you speak of.

Yet another example of the businesses that succeed near military bases (Fort Gordon, United States Army).

Augusta is more a military town than a cultural center.

Augusta is not that bad of a town to live in. I have been here since 1983 and my ex and I decided to stay here after he retired from the Army. I am actually from Ohio. It took me a long time to get use to being around southerners but I like living here. We have alot of military retirees who live here after they retire.

The writer is making generalizations about Augusta based on the relatively small part of it that he has seen. Augusta is the second largest city in Georgia, and most of it is beautiful. If the writer had ever seen Walton Way (about two miles from the Augusta National), he/she would have found beautiful houses, many of which are easily worth six figures. There are plenty of wealthy people living in the Augusta area. Parts of the downtown area aren't all that attractive, and Augusta has its share of low income families, but there are plenty of areas around the Augusta area that are full of wealthy residents.
