Golf

In terms of sophistication, class and popularity, Golf is second to none. A lot of people across the world play this unique sport where you need to put the ball in a hole using clubs. Golf is played in a 18-hole golf course, and you would need to put the ball in these holes in less tries using clubs of different types.

Names who have made golf very popular are Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Annika Sorenstam and some other stalwarts of the game.

The Golf Course and Equipment

Here is your chance to know more about the golf course in much detail. Normally, a golf course has 18 holes. Some of them also have 9 holes, and others have 27-36 holes. Golf courses having 27-36 holes have players choosing sets of 9 holes to play the game. Every golf course will have its own set of areas earmarked for specific activities. Some of them are the teeing area, from where the player tees off, the fairway and the rough, from where players drive the ball towards the green, and the putting green, from where the ball rolls in to the cup or the hole.

Well, to hit the ball, golfers use clubs, which are made of iron and steel. The ball itself has dimples on the surface, which makes it faster to travel in the air.

Golf Trivia and some information.

  • It is a fight between the Dutch and the Scots, as to who was responsible for the start of golf. Though, by popular beliefs, credit of golfĂs inception goes to the Scots.
  • Did you know that the first game of golf was played in Edinborough, Scotland in AD1456?
  • A golf ball has up to 250-400 dimples, and yet some modern day golf ball manufacturers end up adding up to 500 dimples to improve the aerodynamics of the ball.
  • Golf comes from a forbidden Scott word, Gouf, which means to strike. The Dutch have their own synonym to Golf and they call it by the name kolf.
  • Dongxuan Records, a 11th century Chinese records mentions a game very much like the Golf.
  • The Dutch used to play a game in the 13th century, where they used to roll a ball with the help of a stick.
  • The miniature, sholf and the disc versions of golf were all derived from this game.
  • Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots is supposed to have played golf in the Musselburgh Old Links Golf Course, Scotland, which is considered to be oldest golf course.
  • Across the world, you would find about 32000 golf courses. Amazingly, more than half of them are in United States of America alone.

Does it really matter if golf clubs are old and worn? What are the good clubs for beginners? (Answers: 2) (Comments: 0)
I'm wanting to buy a golf club set. I see clubs at the range I can use for free and one brand I remember is callaway. Is that a good brand? They have mostly worn golf clubs. I have played golf already and taken one semester class. I just don't think golf ranges would risk giving out good value clubs for people to borrow since people can easily steal them.

Our company is sponsoring a golf tournament. We are going to be sponsoring some of the holes on the tee boxs handing out prizes. We need a game that we can play for the prizes. We have one game where the players try to hit a tennis ball into a bucket and if they get it in, they get a prize, but we need some more ideas for our other holes. Please Help with some ideas that you guys have done at golf tournaments, or just ones that you have heard of.

Jason Day and Zach Johnson Lead Deutsche Bank

4 Sep 2010 at 12:00am  NORTON, Mass. — In the calm before the storm Friday, the players in the first round of the Deutsche Bank Championship — at least most of them — staged a pre-hurricane party at the T.P.C. Miniature-Golf Tour Across New York?s Boroughs

3 Sep 2010 at 12:00am  FOR some families the summer game is baseball, for others basketball. For mine, it’s miniature golf. For as long as I can remember, my 13-year-old son, Asher, and I have returned every season to Rye Playland or Saxon Woods in Westchester County. This year I floated a new idea. Would he want to putt our way across the city? Play mini-golf in...
